How to Prepare Lotus Domino 6.5 for Remote Mail Access

If you want to access your Lotus mail account by phone, you have to make sure that:

  1. Your Lotus Domino Server supports remote IMAP or POP3 access. This is usually done by opening ports 110 or 143 to allow users to access their mailbox from Internet using mail readers such as Outlook Express. For more details on how to give IMAP or POP3 access to existing Lotus Notes 6.5 users, go to Giving IMAP or POP3 Access to Lotus Users.
  2. Enable Full Text Indexing for mailboxes to be accessed by Evatel . To learn how to do this procedure, go to Enable Full Text Indexing.

Giving IMAP or POP3 Access to Lotus Users

Here is a quick tutorial on how to give IMAP or POP3 access to existing Lotus Notes 6.5 users:
  1. In the Lotus Domino Administrator Client, in the tab "People & Groups", click on "people". A window displays the current Lotus clients.
  2. Choose the user who needs IMAP or POP3 access then click "Edit Person". A window opens.
  3. In the "Mail" section on the right-hand column, change the mail system from "Notes" to "POP3 or IMAP".
  4. Go to the IMAP or POP3 client and enter the username in the "User Name" section. It is not necessary to include the domain name. The password should be the one entered in the "Internet Password" section, before its encryption.
The IMAP or POP3 server should be set like any other mail server, in the mail.server.comformat.

Enabling Full Text Indexing

To access a Lotus mailbox via Evatel, you have to enable full-text indexingon that mailbox. The following procedure shows you how this is accomplished using the web administration of Lotus Domino 6.5: From your Lotus Notes, do the following:
  1. Browse to the database that holds the mailbox and select the Evatel user's mailbox.
  2. Select "Full Text Index..." from the Database tools and create a full-text index.
  3. A window will confirm the creation of the index for the selected mailbox.
